1589 ... Not Just A Good Year
1589. That is the number of miles we drove on our 11-day-long road trip extravaganza. Ethan did wonderful. He loves the car. He sleeps and when he doesn't sleep he plays with his toys. When he gets bored, he make some noise and we either get him a new toy, play peek-a-boo, read or sing to him. It works out nicely.
We had been planning to go to my hometown of Guymon for 2 years now. We knew we wouldn't make it home last year because I was too pregnant to leave home base. So this year we knew we would make it to Pioneer Days. Our plans immediately changed when we found out that Kenny's Grandpa had passed away. We decided our trip from Wichita to Guymon to OKC to Wichita to KC, would change but we didn't have any finalized plans so we took off. We started our drive on May 3 and headed to Wichita and stayed one night with my Dad and Stepmom. They took Charlie for the duration which helped immensely. Friday we arrived in Oklahoma, only after we briefly stopped in Liberal to see Dorothy's house from The Wizard of Oz.
While in Guymon, we celebrated Pioneer Days. It is like an all year school reunion. We spent some much needed time with friends and family as we planned our route to Phoenix for Grandpa Sara's memorial service. With intentions of leaving Monday morning, we called the Pod's who were already out there from KC to check in. That is when KP and his dad thought it would be safer for us if we just kept our original plan and didn't tack another 24 hours on to our route. Thinking back, that would have been extremely hard on all of us, but mostly Ethan, considering we would head 12 hours out, stay one or two days and come back 33 hours. We wrapped up our time with KC, Denise and the Borings' and on Monday, we headed east to Oklahoma City. My bested helped me get a hotel in the bricktown area and it seemed great for all the things we wanted to do while there. We spent every day with my sister and Ben. We walked as much as we could during the day, ate some great food, saw some of our most wonderful old friends and before we knew it, we were headed back to Wichita.
My parents welcomed us warmly. They hosted a bbq on Saturday with the neighbors and Ethan was able to turn his charm on all the neighbor ladies. At night, when he would go down, Grandpa would sneak in there. He was the baby whisperer.
On Sunday, we celebrated HJ's 3rd Birthday at Dzia Dzia and Busia's in KC while traveling through. And that night we were warmly snuggled in our own beds with new memories of our adventures.
