Independence Week
The Pods - Fourth of July Weekend 2011
Talk about a double meaning.
Of course, as American's we have the honor of celebrating our freedom and independence on the Fourth of July. This week did not only include that wonderful day, it included a sneak peek of our parental independence.
That's right folks, KP went back to work this past week after having a extended 5 weeks off from work, leaving me all alone with our sweet Hutch for the very first time. Was it easy? Absolutely not. I thought for sure, he was going to come home to me looking haggard and beastly with wiry gray hair and encrusted food on my face from my 3 minute dinners. However, it was not that way. It went a little more like this; crying spells, (maybe a couple of silent tears from me), diaper changes, feed, pump, feed, pump, feed, diaper changes, and sweet smiles from my child who had no earthly idea that I was a newby at this game.
The good news, the routine is working. Hutch is down for a few hours in a row at night and we are able to still fit in a shower some days.
Having a dependent has made us much more independent, confident and anxious! Thank goodness the nights of paranoia, staring at the video monitor (I don't recommend this people) have subsided. So why not throw another log onto the fire? That is exactly what we did.
We hit the road for the 4th of July and headed to Kansas City.

The mere three hour trip we have made time and time again was Hutch's first long car ride. We had to get him acclimated to the car seat for his whopper of a trip in August to Oklahoma. (Shout out to all my Okla-homies!)
He did amazing. Just a couple extra stops for diaper changes and a feeding and there you have it -- success and the sense of freedom has been restored in our lives.

We also made our way to Kansas but the sign came and went too fast for my delayed reflexes.
Because Kenny's parents, grandparents and sister all reside in KC it just made sense to get Hutch there to meet his Great Grandparents on Kenny's side.
The Great Grandparents
A little icing on the cake: my Dad came to visit from Wichita as well.
Grandpa Kathol
Finally, the best picture in the bunch. One that is irreplaceable...
Hutch is the first of four generations of Pods
Remarkable.
The ride home was a quiet one. We were all exhausted and ready to be out of the car but look foward to seeing our family again soon.
It is exciting to see what all we have done and will do with our kiddo. Today marks his 5th week and he is already a seasoned road-tripper. Can't wait to see where life takes us!
