My Sister's Brother

Funny story.

When I was younger, I looked like a boy. Yah, yah. Laugh all you want.
But this is the best part.

The summer before 5th grade, we moved to Guymon - a small town in the panhandle of Oklahoma. I had just come from a Catholic school, where uniforms were mandatory. I had no idea how to dress and I had the most boyish haircut a girl could have.
Awesome, I know.

I remember my first day at Academy. I walked in wearing a Bart Simpson shirt, which so eloquently stated, "Eat my shorts", hot pink polka dot capri pants, and a hella-cool pair of L.A. Gears. I was totally in style, or so I thought. I would have fit in if I were still in Wichita, but that was not the case.
I walked in and immediately got the "who's that" once over.

I sat down at my desk and looked around, flashing a smile to those coming in the door. Finally, a girl came over and started talking to me.
Monica had befriended me, thus marking the beginning of many years making memories.

We spent many hours watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, making and eating rice crispy treats and talking to boys on the phone. We both had dark hair and dark eyes so we pretended we were twins and even went as far as trick-or-treating as Siamese twins one year.
We were ridiculously inseparable.

Fast forward 4 years. Monica and I were freshmen in high school. One day we started talking about when we first met.
That's when the truth came out; she had really only come over to me that day because she thought I was a cute boy.

Yep. BURN.

Monica and I had our offs and ons throughout high school but our friendship remains. We are now both married and mothers. I will forever laugh at what my sister calls the, "when I had a brother" era.
Thank you Monica for the memories and for thinking I was a hottie. (bwahaha)

Monica and Tab. Circa 1996.
I would share more pictures, but sadly, none of those golden oldies survived my fire.
Here's the proof of when it all began...and the proof of how much my son looks like me.

More memories to come!
